The Clove on Eastbourne Terrace, Paddington
'Clove', has been specifically designed for the busy urban landscape adjacent to Rio Tinto's new offices on Eastbourne Terrace, W2. The work demonstrates appreciation of contemporary British sculpture by an enlightened client and is much admired. For some considerable time I have been fascinated by the possibilities inherent in segmenting the hemisphere. By cutting sections from stainless steel pressings and spinnings I have been able to use a vocabulary of convex and concave forms, the surface treatment being very much a part of the work using both highly polished and matt satin as appropriate.
In designing this work, called 'Clove', I have clustered these plates into a single form, held aloft by a powerful copper clad column. Because of the height of the piece it should work extremely well from all aspects of the public realm, including being seen by anyone directly underneath.
I love working with metal and this is a perfect opportunity to make use of the techniques I have developed over many years.- Professor Bryan Kneale RA
